Czech doctor reveals secrets of Mariánské Lázně spa treatments

Mariánské Lázně, or Marienbad, is a town steeped in the rich tradition of Czech spa culture, boasting a unique combination of four natural healing sources: mineral springs, natural gas, peloids (medicinal mud), and a healing climate. As MUDr. Hovorková from Nové Lázně explains, these resources form the foundation of the spa treatments that have drawn visitors to this picturesque town for centuries.

The power of natural resources

“Mariánské Lázně is unique in all of Europe because it is the only spa town with four natural healing sources,” Dr. Hovorková notes. “We have mineral springs, natural gas, peloids, and now, as of 2023, the climate itself is recognized as a healing resource.”

The town is home to around 140 mineral springs, with 40 in the town center. Each spring has a unique composition, offering different therapeutic benefits. “Some springs are rich in magnesium, others in iron or salts,” Dr. Hovorková explains. “Depending on the patient’s needs, a doctor will recommend a specific drinking cure—typically one or two cups before each meal.”

These springs are also used in mineral baths, where the naturally cold water is heated to 32-34 degrees Celsius. “Carbon dioxide in the water creates millions of bubbles on your skin,” she says. “It’s like taking a champagne bath. The CO2 is absorbed through the skin, expanding capillaries, lowering blood pressure, and promoting relaxation.”

Another remarkable resource is natural gas, known as Maria´s Spring.“This gas is of volcanic origin, which is 99% carbon dioxide, and is unique to our spa,” says Dr. Hovorková. “The natural gas is applied in the form of dry carbon baths. The gas stimulates blood circulation and improves sexual health by stimulating hormones, this procedure is also suitable for people with heart diseases. The second form is gas injections as a part of the treatment of joint diseases and spine problems.”

Peloids, or medicinal mud, are another vital component of the spa’s offerings. “Peloid wraps provide deep tissue heating and mineral nourishment,” she explains. “They’re excellent for treating large joints and along the spine, offering both a warming and healing effect.”

 A climatic spa

In 2023, Mariánské Lázně was officially recognized as a climatic spa thanks to its pristine air quality and natural environment. “We became the sixth spa in the Czech Republic to earn this designation,” says Dr. Hovorková. “This means we can now use our climate as a healing resource. We’re developing new procedures that involve outdoor activities, encouraging our clients to move and breathe in the fresh air.”

Spa vs. wellness

Dr. Hovorková emphasizes the distinction between spa treatments and wellness. “Spa treatments are part of medicine,” she says. “They involve a team of doctors, nurses, and physiotherapists who create personalized treatment plans based on each patient’s health. This sets us apart from wellness centers, where treatments are self-selected.”

Spa treatments go beyond relaxation—they are about healing and rehabilitation. “Our goal is to restore physical and mental well-being,” says Dr. Hovorková. “Whether group rehabilitation in the pool, breathing exercises, or modern physical therapy like magnetotherapy or cryotherapy, everything is tailored to help our patients recover and return to their normal lives as quickly as possible.”

A legacy of healing

The Czech spa tradition dates back centuries, with treatments based initially on empirical knowledge passed down through generations. Today, these practices are supported by evidence-based medicine. “Spa treatment is an integral part of complex patient care,” Dr. Hovorková asserts. “We play a crucial role in prevention, rehabilitation, and helping patients regain their quality of life.”

Dr. Hovorková, who returned to Mariánské Lázně after a distinguished career in Preventive cardiology, is passionate about continuing this legacy. “I grew up here,” she says. “My parents were doctors here, and now I’m dedicated to bringing the benefits of spa treatment to the attention of the professional medical community. We are a vital part of the healthcare system, and without us, there would be much more strain on hospitals and clinics.”
