Physical Therapy, Electromagnetic Field

Short Wave Diathermy

What is short wave diathermy

The high frequency electromagnetic waves with a short wavelength emitted by the device are converted into heat in the body. Special electrodes are placed on opposite sides of the treated area or a special well-isolated cable is wound up around a limb to generate a large electromagnetic field. The high frequency currents may be applied continuously or in pulses according to the medical prescription. The high frequency electric currents do not irritate the skin, muscles or nerves like the low or middle frequency currents used in electrotherapy.

How short wave diathermy helps

The warming-up effect of short waves not only improves circulation and blood flow to the tissues, it also stimulates the function of immune system, thus fighting against inflammation. In addition, it lowers the sugar level in the blood – this effect persists for several hours. In general, the healing effect of short wave diathermy persists almost 48 hours, so the procedure is performed every other day.

Electrotherapy is either performed by a physiotherapist or by a trained nurse. It usually lasts a few minutes (up to 20), only the direct current needs a rather long time to act – from 30 to 60 minutes. Electrotherapy may be combined with ultrasound and is most effective if taken in a series of applications. The frequency and length of applications must be prescribed by a physician as well as the precise current type, its application method, etc. Some currents are applied by means of plate electrodes placed in humid protective sheaths onto your skin and fastened with straps, while others are better used with suction-cup, pen-like or button electrodes. The vacuum effect produced by suction cups may alternate so a micro-massage of the underlying tissue improves the circulation and flow of oxygen into it.

Advisable for:

chronic inflammations (rheumatoid arthritis, gynaecological inflammations, nose and throat), degenerative diseases (arthrosis of the knees, hips, and spine – Bechterew’s disease)

Not advisable for:

any acute inflammation or injury, acute nerve or root pain, peripheral nerve palsy, metallic implants (screws, plates, joint replacements, pacemaker) within 1 m of the application site, large swelling of any body part, abdomen during menstruation, fever, untreated or uncontrolled hypertension, heart insufficiency, acute thrombosis, leg ulcers and other skin defects at the site of application, dysfunction of the thyroid gland, endometriosis, shortness of breath, pregnancy, psychosis, alcohol or drug abuse, malignant tumours and blood disorders, incapacitation, tuberculosis
