Galvanotherapy

What is galvanotherapy

Galvanic current is a direct current that changes the electric charge of tissues and thus affects the activity of the blood capillaries towards the best suitable tissue perfusion. The most frequent application manner is via electrodes placed on the body with humid protective sheaths. The size and placement of plate electrodes are prescribed by the physician as well as their polarity as it substantially affects the healing result. The treatment lasts at least half an hour to bring about the required effect. Other possible applications are in the form of a full-body or partial galvanic bath.

How galvanotherapy helps

Positive cations irritate the surrounding tissues and improve their tonus, leading to enhanced blood perfusion. Such an effect is beneficial in disorders of the peripheral circulation (e.g. Raynaud´s syndrome, posttraumatic swelling). Negative anions reduce electric irritation and suppress painful or otherwise unpleasant sensations (e.g. in neuropathies). The direct current causes no muscle contraction, but you may feel tingling (later disappears) and see a reddening of the target area. These are beneficial effects.

Galvanic Bath

A galvanic bath uses the tranquillising effect of direct electric current on agitated nerves. This makes the treatment suitable for all conditions of pain in the locomotor system, either due to degenerative diseases, inflammations or overload. It also has a positive effect on improving the metabolism of the tissues, the reduction of swelling and spasticity. The procedure is carried out in a metallic bathtub where the whole body is submerged in warm water at 34°C whilst electricity passes around the body.

Four-Cell Galvanic Bath

The forearms and lower limbs are placed into 4 small water tubs – cells. The galvanic current then runs only through the submerged parts of the limbs, not through the whole body. The treatment improves blood circulation in all four limbs, it is further beneficial for polyneuropathies (e.g. in diabetes) or in neuralgies.

Advisable for:

Musculoskeletal diseases, orthopaedic and accident rehabilitation, neurological diseases, vascular problems in limbs

Not advisable for:

Metallic implants – cardiostimulators, joint replacements, screws, etc. at the current pathway, infectious diseases, fever, acute inflammation, untreated or uncontrolled hypertension, epilepsy (neck to be avoided, elsewhere possible), acute thrombosis, phlebitis, leg ulcers and other skin defects, incontinence, pregnancy, unstable diabetes, psychosis, alcohol or drug abuse, severe cardiovascular disease, malignant tumours (at the site of application, elsewhere possible) and blood disorders
