Interference currents

What are interference currents

Interference currents are usually produced by applying electrodes in a cross position so that the current running between one pair of electrodes crosses deep in the tissue with the current running between the other pair of electrodes. At the point of crossing, the currents interfere with each other producing a new current that has a healing effect. This may be potentiated by applying the currents via suction cups that exhibit a micro-massage on the surface tissues.

How interference currents help

The effect of this procedure depends on the frequency of the interference currents. Frequencies in the range of 1-100 Hz bring about the most varied results – the reduction of swelling, improvement of blood and lymph perfusion, twitching of the damaged muscles (used as muscle gymnastics), stimulation of a lazy urinary bladder, and the reduction of stress incontinence. Higher frequencies up to 130 Hz produce pain relief, and even higher ones between 150-200 Hz result in the relaxation of the muscles.

Interference

In this treatment, different electrical pads at a medium frequency are placed onto the body together with a small vacuum. The effect is one of a micro-massage on the damaged tissue. Depending on the pre-set frequency, the muscles can be stimulated to a so-called muscle gymnastic condition, or alternatively produce relaxation in the muscle tone to have an analgesic effect. The treatment has two advantages: firstly, it reduces pain, and secondly, the micro-massage improves the circulation and flow of oxygen to the tissue, resulting in a healing effect.

More information about treatment including indications and contraindications

Electrotherapy is either performed by a physiotherapist or by a trained nurse. It usually lasts a few minutes (up to 20), only the direct current needs a rather long time to act – from 30 to 60 minutes. Electrotherapy may be combined with ultrasound and is most effective if taken in a series of applications. The frequency and length of applications must be prescribed by a physician as well as the precise current type, its application method, etc. Some currents are applied by means of plate electrodes placed in humid protective sheaths onto your skin and fastened with straps, while others are better used with suction-cup, pen-like or button electrodes. The vacuum effect produced by suction cups may alternate so a micro-massage of the underlying tissue improves the circulation and flow of oxygen into it.
